Fox have confirmed that the eighth season of 24 will be the show’s last.
The announcement comes after weeks of speculation and predictions that an official statement of this nature was imminent, and as a result the news comes as no real surprise.
Suggestions that the show could move from Fox to NBC have been quashed by Kiefer Sutherland, having made the joint-decision with executive producer Howard Gordon to call it a day.
“The writers are producing the equivalent of 12 films a year, which is unheard of, and Howard felt to do a ninth would be potentially damaging,” said Sutherland. “We both felt strongly that there has been a demand and an interest in a 24 film, which would be a two-hour representation of a 24-hour day, so we felt it was time to move in that direction.”
As Sutherland alludes to, plans appear to be already well underway for a 24 feature film in the future, but as for Jack Bauer’s television exploits; his somewhat eventful days are over.
