Whilst making their way through the woods, Willie realises that the scarf Jack gave to him earlier on is missing. He turns around and notices that it has got caught up in the bushes and rushes back towards it to retrieve it. Carl Benton tells him to come back before noticing to his horror that there are land mines in close proximity to him.
Carl: Stop. Stop! Don’t- Don’t move!
Carl desperately runs after Willie to intercept him, and his momentum results in knocking Willie to the ground, and in doing so, he steps on one of the mines himself.
Carl: Jack! Stay there. Don’t move. Don’t come near me.
It doesn’t take Jack long to figure out what is going on but knows he must not let on to Willie. Jack calls Willie over and tells him to follow the other boys. Jack approaches Carl to see if anything can be done to stop the mine from detonating. Jack digs around the mine and describes it to Carl. It confirms Carl’s suspicions that if he takes his weight off the mine, it will detonate. Jack says that he will try to disarm it but Carl repeatedly insists that there is no time and that he should stop and leave him behind.
Carl: It’s all right, Jack. I can die like this. Just- Just take the kids to the embassy. Make sure they’re safe.
Carl requests that Jack gives him the rifle, stating that he can “buy him some time” and “maybe more”.
As much as it pains Jack to do so, he leaves Carl and rejoins the children to continue their journey to the American Embassy.
Carl: (to the on-looking children) Go ahead with Jack. I’ll be right behind.
Willie: Mr. Benton!
Carl: I’ll catch up. Go. Go.
Carl and Jack exchange nods before a tearful Carl is left behind. He isn’t given too long to reflect on the situation, however, as he hears Dubaku’s men approaching almost immediately.
Carl covers up the exposed mine with the surrounding dirt and raises his rifle in the air to signify his surrender. One of Dubaku’s men sees Benton and notifies him. Carl slowly lowers his rifle to the ground as Dubaku’s men approach him.
Dubaku: Who are you?
Carl: I’m Benton.
Dubaku: Where is your friend?
Carl: Which one?
An unimpressed Dubaku shoots Carl in his right arm, but he manages to keep his foot placed firmly on top of the mine.
Dubuku: Where is he?
Carl: I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Dubaku shoots him for a second time, this time in his left shoulder.
A pain-ridden Carl says “all right” and pretends to be about to reveal Jack’s location by muttering a few words quietly, drawing Dubaku in closer to him so that he can hear.
Dubaku tells one of his men to bring him to him at which point Carl tells him to “go to hell” and releases his foot off the mine, leading it to detonate.
Jack and the boys hear the explosion in the distance.
Willie: What was that?
Jack: Nothing. Just keep moving.
Knowing what the sound was and what it meant, Jack allows the children to go on ahead of him whilst he takes a moment to quietly reflect on the death of his friend.
